SNP Councillor with £4,000 council tax debt named as Caroline Stephen

  • Alfie Baron
It was widely reported in February that an SNP Councillor from North Lanarkshire had a Council Tax debt of £4,000.

The debt was paid off by SNP colleagues using a special fund they all contribute to - immediately prior to a vital budget vote. Councillors with council debts are not legally allowed to vote in budget matters. It is thought the debt was paid off as not to identify and embarrass the Councillor.

Reports are now suggesting that the SNP Councillor in question is Caroline Stephen.

Caroline Stephen, 43, has represented the Coatbridge West area for North Lanarkshire Council since 2017.

The SNP lost the budget vote with the Conservatives backing the minority Labour leadership.

SNP insiders are said to be angry that the debt was settled for Caroline Stephen - with some claiming they didn't know the extent of the debt until after the decision to bail her out had been made.

How could the SNP hierarchy let Miss Stephen run as a candidate with so much debt owing to the Council?
