Their investigation found that 18 items inside the boxes had been imported from China, while one came from Malaysia and another from Thailand.
Just three were made in the UK, with the same number produced in Europe. A further three - plus the actual box - were of unknown origin.
The SNP’s Early Years Minister Maree Todd had called for Scottish firms to apply to supply goods for the baby boxes. The results reported by the Scottish Sun show the SNP claim to be a total farce.
The Conservative shadow health secretary, Miles Briggs, said:
We believe limited resources should be focused on the most vulnerable in society, not spread thinly and wasted like we are seeing from the SNP.Labour Shadow Economy Secretary Jackie Baillie said:
“There is a real question over whether they offer value for money.
“It appears from this evidence that the people getting real value out of them are Chinese manufacturers.
It’s welcome that the SNP is now trying to make sure that Scottish firms benefit from public sector contracts such as the baby box.
“But this needs to extend beyond that to all public sector contracting so that we make sure our money is invested in Scottish jobs and Scottish businesses.
“After a decade of mismanaging our economy, with the Scottish economy continuing to lag behind the rest of the UK, it is the least the SNP government should be offering business in Scotland.
