SNPs Nicola Sturgeon embarrasses herself with passport rant

  • Alfie Baron
First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has embarrassed herself once again after ranting about Theresa May's passport announcement.

Nicola Sturgeon lost the plot as the Home Office announced their plans for a new passport. The post-Brexit passport will again have blue covers.

Theresa May tweeted:

The UK passport is an expression of our independence and sovereignty - symbolising our citizenship of a proud, great nation.

"That's why we have announced that the iconic #bluepassport will return after we leave the European Union in 2019.
Nicola Sturgeon quickly replied:

The open, inclusive, civic, internationalist Scottish independence movement that I'm so proud to be part of could not be further removed from this insular, inward looking, blue passport-obsessed nonsense.

"Never has 'stop the world, Scotland wants to get on' felt more relevant.
Home Office Minister Brandon Lewis said the new passport would be the "most high-tech and secure we have ever seen".

The usual grievances were aired by SNP MPs & Ex-MPs:

John Nicolson tweeted (now appears to be deleted!): I was born in the 60s. I never had a black blue passport. My family were too poor to travel abroad. I had paper visitor passports when I was a student. And then, blissfully, a EU passport offering me a world of opportunity

Paul Monaghan Aside from the fact this post from @ukhomeoffice is inaccurate, most people in Scotland would prefer the UK Home Office to stop worrying about the colour of passports and start treating those who want to come and live in Scotland fairly and with respect.

John Nicolson tweeted: Tories continue to fetishise a meaningless symbol. Passport colour doesn’t represent national values.

Stewart McDonald: Blue passports and mead for everyone

Ian Blackford: I quite like my current passport guaranteeing access to all EU states without any particular inconvenience. You want one that takes away those rights. Pretty well sums up your leadership.

Angus MacNeil: I m 47 and never had a blue passport and when experience of them is that they are a nuisance :)

Kirtsy Blackman:Call me old fashioned, but I’d rather have guaranteed visa free travel in 27 countries than a blue passport.
