SNP councillor: Debts paid from council funds

Reports are suggesting that a female councillor on North Lanarkshire Council has had her £4,000 council tax debt paid off using a council fund usually reserved for council elections and by-elections.

North Lanarkshire Council has a vital budget vote in the next few days. Any councillor who has a debt with the council is legally forbidden from taking part in budget votes. The common belief is that the debt was paid using council funds as not to embarrass or name the councillor concerned. The councillor's identity would have been revealed if she hadn't been present at the vote.

Do the SNP have no shame when it comes to financial matters like this?

Independent councillor Alan Beveridge said no member of the public who owed the council £4000 would have their debt paid off like the councillor.

He reportedly said:

“Ordinary citizens don’t get bailed out. If I was a bin man and I worked for the council and owed them that much, they'd be arresting my wages. It’s not right.”
