SNP Councillor Alex Lunn in new SNP row

The attempted deselection of councillor Alex Lunn by activists has resulted in a row in Edinburgh's Craigentinny/Duddingston ward. The successful vote for deselection has been overturned by SNP party headquarters.

A vote earlier this week saw activists win the deselection vote by 29 to eight. It has since been alleged that SNP party headquarters ruled the meeting void because it was one short of a minimum attendance.

Reports are suggesting this has led to both branch convener Lee-Anne Menzies and David Manson resigning. The SNP have put forward two new candidates at the last minute. The SNP are fielding three candidates in the Craigentinny/Duddingston ward. The replacements are Ian Campbell and Mridul Wadhwa. Both are from the Edinburgh area.

Many have taken to Facebook to complain - with one commenting: “Three candidates we as a branch had not chosen – so much for local democracy.”

Others suggest that at a “brutal” selection meeting earlier this year, Ms Menzies and Mr Manson had both been selected unopposed while only four out of 24 members present had backed Cllr Alex Lunn.

An SNP spokesman said: “Alex Lunn was selected as a candidate for the Craigentinny/Duddingston ward under the rules of the party, and his nomination was upheld by the SNP’s national executive committee.”
