SNP Councillor Shabbar Jaffri suspended from party and reported to police

SNP Councillor Shabbor Jaffri is the latest person to be suspended by the SNP. It follows a probe which is said to have run for many months.

Mr Jaffri, who has been a Glasgow Councillor since 2012, has been placed on "administrative suspension". Local authority officers have allegedly found "inconsistencies" in information that he has provided. It is believed that this evidence has also been handed over to police.

Reports suggest that Mr Jaffri doesn't know the nature of the details which have been passed to the police - but acknowledges that he has been placed on suspension. Reports also seem to suggest that initial investigations centred around council tax issues which then led onto further investigation.

A Glasgow SNP group spokesman said: "Councillor Jaffri was placed on administrative suspension as soon as the SNP was notified and this will remain the case until the outcome of the investigation is known. Given the ongoing investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to make any further comment."

Mr Jaffri said: "Like the group, I was only notified this had been passed to police some days ago. The decision to suspend me is not untoward. It's a normal decision. The news has come as a surprise and shock to me and I'm trying to ascertain what has been referred to the police. "I can't think of any inconsistencies in the information I provided and I look forward to contact from the police. I am very curious about this and what any investigation might be about."
